The deserts of Kau are far from barren. The trials were marked by stone pillars. We encountered peles hair and black sand desert. Ohia blossomed with lehua flowers all around an a strange orange grass grew along the trail. This day I the desert was cold and grey but we enjoyed it.
Many surface outbreaks no ocean entry. A nice hike to see Pele and plenty of sun.
Here are the pics, We have also posted videos from the night on youtube search punatic, lava on youtube. Or call for further info.

From another point of view. Big Island Liven it loven it.
The day at the beach and then messing around at the look out.
We hitched and bused to hanalei bay and ended up meeting some friends there. So we decided to stay the night. Previous night we also got to Hanalei and had a fire and some drinks. Morning we were destined for good coffee and we found it. I’ve been impressed with the quality of local coffee shops on Kauai.
The Trail into Kalalau Was pretty smooth and beautiful Not to mention dangerous. We hitch hiked in to the trailhead. We started at about 1130 in the morning did the last 2 miles by flashlight Including crossing the last river in the dark.
We took a 3 day expedition to the valley. 11 miles in 11 miles out. Some say it’s 17 miles . it’s considered 1 of the top 5 most dangerous hikes in america. We survived what is the biggest storms of the year. We were flash flooded at our campsite and were moved we held up under the ranger station. There were so many waterfalls even the trails became waterfalls. With in about an hour and 15 minutes we saw the dunes erode at least 4 feet down and that was 10 feet from our campsite. The trails were so eroded as we came out we got lost 1 time. Trail became creek creek became goat trail. Note to self and others next time bring the rope.
1 day turns into a week.
I only packed for a day and a half
Meeting lots of cool people and seeing lots of awesome sites.
Were abouts to embark on a hiking camping trip
